Lonlas Forge Merseyside Connections |
During a recent holiday
in Bulgaria, Sandra Hammond struck up a friendship
with the two Liverpool ladies pictured above. Whilst
partaking of a few Brandies the girls forged a close
friendship that has continued following their return
to the UK. The girls discussed every manner of subject
during their holiday, but one topic, which proved of
great interest to the girls, was our very own Lonlas
Youth Club. Let me introduce you to the two ladies
in the photo – on the left we have “Calamity Jane”,
who is looking for a Liverpool supporting millionaire
who will buy her an executive box at Anfield and on
the right we have lovely Liver bird Sheila. All three
girls keep in touch daily by phone and the conversations
usually include Lonlas. The girls in Liverpool log
onto our site on a daily basis and check out the News
pages and have been very interested in the history
of our club. These “Three Musketeers” motto really
is “One for All” and they all share happy memories
supporting their chosen teams. Incidentally should
a rich Scouser with an executive box at Anfield read
this, you can contact Jane via this site!! |

New Kit for Lads
By Malcolm Rees
A group of 50 youngsters from Skewen will be playing in
a soccer tournament in Holland this weekend in brand new
kit thanks to kind-hearted local people.
Lonlas Boys’ Club feared the teams would have to appear
in old threadbare shirts and shorts after a sponsor organised
to provide new kit pulled out at the last minute.
The old jerseys were so bad that they were likely to disintegrate
in the next wash, said one of the club leaders Mr. Ceri Howells.
The youngsters were setting off for the Dutch soccer tournament
today. Three teams, under 13’s, under 14’s and
under 15’s are taking part.
Lonlas Boys Club had planned the journey for months and the
lads were incredibly disappointed when the sponsor pulled
out at the last minute, said Mr. Howells.
But the youngster’s blushes at the tournament have
been saved.
For Fox and Company of Neath Abbey have provided three sets
of jerseys while Brookfield Medical Supplies at Lonlas stepped
in with a complete kit for one of the teams.
|
Neath Liberal Club also provided £150
to help finance the trip. Said Mr. Howells “I was amazed
by the response. It is better than I could ever have hoped
for. All three teams
have brand new kits to play in the tournament.”
" The firms and the Liberal Club have been fantastic. They have transformed
the visit”. Nearly 50 boys and a number of adults left Lonlas at 3
a.m. They play their first game in Holland tomorrow and are due back late
on Tuesday.
Added Mr. Howells, “Everyone is excited about the trip”. “The
lads have been saving hard and with their new outfits they are looking forward
to the visit even more”.

1,200
miles raise £750
 |
Seven Skewen scavengers have
completed their own mission impossible by travelling 1,200
miles by train to
raise more than £750 for Children In Need.
The youngsters, all aged 13 and 15, and members of Lonlas
Youth Club, set off from Skewen, Neath for the marathon
trip to London
and then Edinburgh and back on Wednesday.
And they spent the entire journey walking up and down the
trains with their collecting buckets to boost their sponsorship
money.
|
Club Leader
Mr. Kerry Howell said: “We
left Swansea station at 5.51 a.m. on Wednesday and arrived
back at 12.45 a.m. on Thursday. We collected on the trains
as we went along, they must have walked miles”. The
scavengers went first to Paddington Station, by underground
to King’s
Cross, up to Edinburgh on the Flying Scotsman and back again.
“ We would like to give special thanks to the guard on the Swansea to Paddington
train, Mr. Roy Woodgate, who kept announcing that we were collecting and giving
the latest total. He also arranged for us to have lunch in the British Rail staff
canteen when we got there”.
The journey took 18 hours and raised £758 with more money to come in
from sponsors. The seven youngsters were Tracy Britton, Helen Best, Helene
Owen, Craig
Richards, John Smith, Paul Hutt and Richard Barlow, all from Lonlas. |
